4th SKIF International Seminar

Important Notice Regarding Change of Venue for 4th SKIF International Seminar

We hope that you are all looking forward to this year’s SKIF International Seminar, which will be held at the end of this week, from Friday, March 31 to Sunday, April 2. We are writing to inform you that, due to a mistake by Ota City, we were not able to secure Omori Sports Center, the venue that we had originally planned to use during the three-day seminar. As a result, we will be using the gymnasiums of several public schools located in Ota Ward (see details below).

Because different classes during the seminar will be held at different venues, we would like you to take extra care to make sure that you go to the correct venue for the class you plan to attend.

We understand that members of the same organization may be separated due to different classes at separate venues. If this arrangement should cause any problems for you, please discuss the matter with one of the SKIF Headquarter instructors so that arrangements can be made to ensure that members of the same organization will be able to train together in the same class.

Also, please note that parking will not be available at any of the schools during the seminars, so please do not come by car.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience that this change in venue causes but would like to request your understanding and cooperation in helping us make this seminar a success despite the challenges resulting from this change in plans.

15. Joint training session with Ota City residents
Although this seminar is being organized by SKIF, support, including securing the seminar venue and other cooperation, is once again being provided by Ota City in Tokyo, in which SKIF Headquarters is located, and by the Ota City Board of Education and Ota City Karate Federation. Therefore, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on the second day of the seminar, a joint training session (no fee required) will be held with karate practitioners residing in Ota City. All members taking part in the seminar are encouraged to participate in this joint training session.

Other matters of importance

SKIF Headquarters will not be arranging lodging for this seminar. As such, participants are requested to take care of all necessary lodging arrangements on their own.

Late March/early April is a busy time of the year for hotels in the Tokyo area (particularly in and around Kamata) and several hotels in the area are already completely booked for the period. Accordingly, we strongly recommend that you reserve lodging as early as possible.

The venue where the seminar will be held is located in walking distance (approx. 6 minutes) from Heiwajima Station on the Keihin Kyuko Main Line (Keikyu Honsen). Accordingly, participants may want to consider lodging near Shinagawa* Station or in the vicinity of Kamata Station (both of which offer easy access to the seminar venue), or somewhere in between these two locations.

* Shinagawa is the largest district in the southwestern region of Tokyo and offers a large selection of city and business hotels.

Distances between various train stations
Heiwajima Station —— Shinagawa Station: approx. 10 minutes by train
Heiwajima Station —— Keikyu Kamata Station: approx. 5 minutes by train

Note: Although JR Shinagawa Station and Keikyu Shinagawa Station are located directly next to each other, Kamata Station and Keikyu Kamata Station are separated by a distance requiring about a 10-minute walk.

SKIF Headquarters is located at Kugahara Station (about a 1-minute walk from the station) on the Tokyu Ikegami Line, which is approximately 7 minutes by train from Kamata Station.

Important Points: 4th SKIF International Seminar (Mar 31–Apr 2, 2017)

To help us make the 4th SKIF International Seminar a success and ensure that everyone has a meaningful and enjoyable stay in Japan, we would like to request that all participants observe the following guidelines.

  1. First of all, we would like to offer our sincerest apologies for the last-minute change in venue, which we understand will cause a major inconvenience for seminar participants. We would, however, appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
  2. We will be making use of three public schools located in Ota Ward. Because the new venues are educational institutions, we will need to take extra care in the way we use them. We must make sure to keep all of the facilities clean (especially the toilets) and we must take all of our trash with us when we leave. We must also display proper behavior toward the school staff, being careful to greet them politely. Our goal is not to leave each school in the same condition that we found it, but rather to leave it looking even cleaner than when we arrived.
  3. While in Japan, please obey all laws and rules, make an effort to understand the country’s customs and way of thinking, and always conduct yourself with pride as a citizen of the world and as a representative of the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation.
  4. While we respect all countries, regions, races and religions, please be aware that you are in Japan and try to deepen your understanding of, and friendship with, other countries as an ambassador of private diplomacy.
  5. There is a Japanese proverb that says, “A bird leaving its nest does not dirty the water.” This means that one should not make or leave behind any problems when it is time to leave. Please take this Japanese proverb to heart.
  6. Please do not leave any valuable belongings unattended.
  7. You are not allowed to wear shoes inside of the school buildings or in the gymnasiums. Also, you are not allowed to use any facilities that are not being used for the seminar.
  8. As a general rule, eating is not allowed inside of the schools. A special exception, however, has been made that will allow seminar participants to eat and drink. Please show respect for the kindness that the schools have shown us by taking all of your trash with you when you leave.
  9. Karate-do begins with a bow of respect and ends with a bow of respect. Please do not forget to properly greet your fellow SKIF members as well as the school staff and the Ota City karate practitioners who will join us during the joint training session.
  10. Because the schedule will be very tight during the seminar, we request that all participants be on time for all sessions. All sessions will begin promptly at the scheduled times.
  11. Shooting video and taking photographs will not be permitted during the seminar.

Although we are providing you with this list of guidelines, we are confident that you are already following such rules of etiquette in your own countries. We look forward to your cooperation in helping us to make this an enjoyable event for everyone.
